Transferring KSoC Email to Campus UMail

If you are currently using the KSoC email server, you will need to perform two steps to move from the old KSoC email server to UMail: forwarding your KSoC email and transferring your old email data to UMail.

Connecting your Email Client to UMail

Once your KSoC Email is being forwarded to the UMail system, you will need to  connect your Email client to UMail.

Setting Your cs.utah.edu Alias

If you desire to continue to use your <username>@cs.utah.edu address under UMail, you can set this up to be your primary alias.  The alias should already be in a “deleted” state on the system and merely has to be re-enabled.

You will need to login to unid.utah.edu.  In the UNID interface, your <username>@cs.utah.edu address will show in the list of Email Addresses as “Inactive”.  Click on the “Enable” check box to mark it, then click on the “Change UMail Alias Information”.

NOTE: You must login through the campus VPN (vpn.utah.edu) in order to reach the unid.utah.edu system.

The process for this change can take some time, up to sixty (60) minutes to reach all of the UMail services.  You can double-check the status of the process, by going to https://webtools.umail.utah.edu and selecting the “Mailbox Settings” tab, to see the MS Exchange info.

NOTE: At this time there is an unresolved issue, where some users are not able to set their <username>@cs.utah.edu address to be their default “Reply-To:”.  If you run into this problem, you can contact the UIT Help Desk and they can make this change for you.

Transferring Old KSoC Email to UMail

Once you have added your UMail account to your desired client (see Connecting Email Clients to UMail), you will need to transfer your old emails from the old KSoC email server, to UMail.  The process is very simple: Drag the folders you desire to transfer from your KSoC account to your UMail account in your client.  (NOTE: This includes folders such as “Sent” or “Archives”.)

It is recommended to only transfer a few folders at a time, especially folders which are very large. This prevents the data volume from being overwhelming for the client to handle.

NOTE: If you are connecting to UMail via IMAP, such as is the case with Thunderbird, IMAP will not allow whole folders to be copied.  You must create each folder in OWA, or the Outlook client and then copy the files from the old folder to the new.

Using a Web Browser Instead of an Email Client

Optionally, you can use the campus Outlook Web Application (OWA) and use your Web browser to access your UMail account through umail.utah.edu.  OWA should work with most modern browsers.  It is important to note that you cannot transfer your old email using the OWA system!  However, once you’ve transferred your old email, you can use OWA as your regular client.
